Mission Statement
The
Engineering Fundamentals Department will primarily fill a
service role within the college of engineering by offering fundamental
engineering courses, mentoring students, and conducting various
outreach activities. Hallmarks of this department will include technology-rich,
discovery-based learning as well as an atmosphere where diversity
in its broadest sense is nurtured
The
Department of Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Tech contributes
much to both students who are uncertain of their future in engineering
and to those students who know what they want to do, how they want
to create.
Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Tech acts as a compass, guiding
and leading students towards the engineering discipline that best
suits their strengths and preferences.
The
trimester (three semester) curriculum template adopted for Fall
2002 by Michigan Tech favors a community learning approach to education
in the College of Engineering, whereby all entering students in
engineering will share a common first-year experience within various
student "communities". Such an approach to engineering
will allow students to acquire hands-on knowledge of engineering
programs offered by Michigan Tech - in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and
Computer Engineering, Geological Engineering and Sciences, Materials
Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering - Engineering Mechanics,
and Mining Engineering.
Upon
the conclusion of the first year, it is expected that students of
Engineering will be ready to make their first and most important
career decision - stating with certainty and confidence, "my
major is
Engineering at Michigan Tech!"
