September Newsbrief for Michigan Tech Engineering Fundamentals
The faculty and staff of Engineering Fundamentals welcome the new first year engineering students. This year will be full of fun and exciting learning opportunities:

• In ENG1101, we have planned a design project that focuses on the design and simulation of a bungee jump.
• The students in ENG1001 will create in a poster summarizing an Engineering Ethics Case Study. These posters will be judged by faculty from the College of Engineering.
• The design project in ENG1102 will look at the design of a Human Hybrid Powered Vehicle.

We have faculty, advisors and staff who are available to answer any questions you have:

• Dillman 112:
  • Tina Sarazin can help you with scheduling issues. She also can help you with questions regarding Michigan Tech.
  • Amy Monte and AJ Hamlin are the advisors for the General Engineering and Biomedical Engineering students. They can help you decide and plan out your first year classes. During orientation week and the first two weeks of classes, they have drop-in appointments only. After that, you can stop by Dillman 112 to see Tina and set up an appointment to meet with one of the advisors. You can also email your questions to them at engadv@mtu.edu.
  • Brett Hamlin is the Associate Chair and a Senior Lecturer. He is also the advisor for the Baja Enterprise and a Lecturer in the department. Stop by and see him if you have questions regarding the department.
  • Amber Kemppainen is a Lecturer. She is interested in engineering ethics, bio-fuels production and use, and developed the New Orleans Flood Control Project for ENG1102.
    
    
• Dillman 104:
  • Jim Hertel is a Professor of Practice. He advises the Automotive Systems Enterprise and the MTU Sailing Club. He is active in the development of the PACE competition for ENG1102 students which occurs in the Spring semester.
  • Norma Veurink is a Senior Lecturer. Along with AJ Hamlin, she is working on a research project that investigates the importance of spatial visualization skills in engineering and engineering courses.
  • When AJ Hamlin is not advising, she is a Senior Lecturer. This fall, she will be teaching ENG1002, a spatial visualization course.
    
    
• Dillman 205:
  • Doug Oppliger is a Senior Lecturer and advises the Robotics Enterprise. He has been active in the development and implementation of the project oriented sections of ENG1102. Along with Norma Veurink and Jim Hertel, he teaches a Statics/Mechanics of Materials course.
  • Mir Sadri is a Professor of Practice and the Advisor for the Alpha Society (a first year engineering honor society). He is interested in how students learn and using this interest in improving the courses he teaches.
  • Gretchen Hein is a Senior Lecturer and is an advisor for the Society of Women Engineers. She and Brett Hamlin teach a Thermo/Fluids course and a Fluids course for non-mechanical engineering students.
    
    
• Dillman 201:
• Kris Mattila is the Interim Department Chair, and an Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He enjoys teaching construction courses and working with students.
